Citizen to Citizen

WHO DO WE SUPPORT?

We support mutual aid groups – organically self-organizing communities driven by voluntary spirit, leading their own initiatives and collective efforts. These are the often “invisible heroes” who demonstrate compassion, solidarity, and collective action without reliance on external aid actors.

Our focus includes:

  • Groups inspired by shared human values such as kindness, compassion, empathy, love, and resilience in the face of adversity
  • Long-standing, traditional community structures as well as emergent and spontaneous groups
  • Informal, structured, or self-help groups that operate independently and lead their own activities

Examples of mutual aid groups we catalyze include idirs, long-term cultural associations, cooperatives, IDPs, and survivor-led communities – such as individuals affected by gender-based violence (GBV), conflict and internal displacement. We also engage with vulnerable groups such as women, children, youth and the broader community.

Mutual aid is distinct from charity. It is not dependent on external support, not imposed or externally formed, and does not operate on transactional relationships. Instead, it is rooted in solidarity, shared responsibility and collective care.
